The start was delayed until 8pm after the visitors were held up on the M25.

Hemel Hempstead started strongly, and Michael Spencer cleared a header off the line following a corner on the left.

Spencer was again in action when he cleared a shot off the line soon after.

Hornchurch settled and almost scored when Tom Daley slotted the ball through to George Purcell, who ran on, and Laurie Walker made an excellent save to keep the goal bound shot out.

Carl Rook went close with a shot on the turn which went wide of the far post.

Hemel Hempstead took the lead when Rickie Hayles conceded a free kick ten yards outside the area. Inigo was still lining the wall up when JORDAN PARKES crashed the free kick into the unguarded goal.

Hornchurch quickly drew level when Tambeson Eyong made a solo run from near the half way line, powered through the middle, and scored with a spectacular shot from the edge of the area.

Hornchurch went close when Phil Starkey made ground on the right before slipping the ball inside to George Purcell, who turned it out to Michael Spencer on the left. Spencer cut inside and his hard shot went narrowly wide of the post.

A minute later Hemel Hempstead regained the lead when Derek Duncan conceded a penalty, which was converted by JORDAN PARKES.

Eyong almost netted shortly afterwards, after Simon Glover had opened up the defence, but Walker saved well to keep the ball out of the net.

Hornchurch forced the pace after the interval, Walker turning a Tom Daley shot around the post for a corner. Daley sent the corner into the middle where Walker did well to save from Purcell.

Inigo then did well to save a header following a corner, when the visiting forward found himself unmarked and in front of goal.

Play was broken up for a series of substitutions, and Hemel Hempstead began to have more of the territorial play, with Inigo having plenty to occupy him, including one very good save.

Josh Griffiths went close with a shot following good work by Chris Bourne, and it was Bourne again who opened up the visiting defence on the left, before slotting the ball into the middle, where Walker saved well from Purcell.

Duncan also opened up the left side with a good pass to Bourne, with Walker saving well once again.

Hornchurch had their best chance to level the score on 80 minutes when Junior Lawrence ran through, but his shot was comfortably saved by Walker.

Derek Duncan, who already has to serve a one-match ban, after being sent off whilst playing for Maidenhead, was shown a straight red seven minutes from time following a mistimed tackle.
